Editorial standards

How the India edition sources Indian law, how it presents numbers, what a reviewer credit means, where research ends and advice begins, and how to tell us about an error. Standards updated 20 October 2026.
Sources

What counts as a source, and what does not

A statement of Indian law on this edition rests on one of four things, in this order: the text of the statute or regulation (the Income-tax Act 1961 and 2025, FEMA 12(R)/2015-RB and the other RBI notifications, IFSCA regulations, the Insurance Act 1938); a circular, notification or memorandum of the CBDT, the RBI, IFSCA or the Ministry of Finance; a decision of a tribunal or court, named with its citation and date; or a professional summary from a Big Four firm, a national law firm or an established tax publisher, used only where the primary text is not public, and marked in the page as secondary. Blogs, product pages and forum threads are not sources, though we read them to learn what people are asking.

Every page lists its sources at the end with a link to the primary text where one exists. A section or regulation number in the body is a promise that the writer read it. Where the Income-tax Act 2025 renumbers a section and we have not verified the new number against the official concordance, the page says so and keeps the 1961 number.

Numbers

Worked examples and calculators

Every rupee example is computed in full on the page, with the rate, the year and the assumption named, and uses lakh and crore the way an Indian reader counts. Calculators show their formula under the result, hold every input editable, and say on screen when a situation gives no advantage (an NRI in the UAE has nothing to defer) rather than producing a flattering number. Tax rates are stated for the financial year named on the page, with surcharge and cess where they matter. A figure we have not verified, such as a policy’s cost assumption, is labelled a working assumption.

Open questions

When the law is unsettled, the page says so

Several questions that matter to a reader of this edition have no settled answer: whether a resident may buy a GIFT City policy under LRS while regulation 4 of the FEMA Insurance Regulations stands unamended; whether an offshore unit-linked policy is a ULIP for section 45(1B) or any other policy for section 56(2)(xiii); how much weight two tribunal orders on foreign policies carry. The standard is to state both readings, name what each rests on, and tell the reader what to ask their CA or bank for in writing. A page that resolved these in the policy’s favour would be easier to write and would be wrong.

Reviewers

What a reviewer credit means

A page that names a reviewer was read by that person for the stated scope: terms, relevance to practice, and sources. It is not legal or tax advice and not a formal approval. The India edition does not yet name a reviewer qualified in Indian law; the seat is described on Advisory board, and no page claims an Indian professional review until it is filled.

Limits

Where research ends and advice begins

The pages describe the law in general terms and apply it to invented families in named cities. They do not review a reader’s own return, residence, policy or remittance, and a written answer to a research question is general information, not advice on the reader’s position. PPLI.com is not registered with IRDAI or SEBI, does not solicit or arrange insurance in India, and takes no commission from any insurer. A resident of India needs the Reserve Bank of India’s permission for a new foreign life policy, and every page that touches the subject says so.

Errors

How to report a mistake

Send the page URL, the statement, and the source or calculation that shows the problem to info@ppli.com. A substantive correction is made on the page with the date changed in its provenance block; a correction that changes a conclusion is noted in the text. We do not remove pages to avoid a correction.
